How Brene Brown changed my life in a coffee shop in Cardiff...
One Saturday afternoon while I was having a cuppa in a cafe waiting for my son’s class to finish; I took along Brene Brown’s book Atlas of the Heart.
Not one full chapter in and I was sat in the cafe with tears streaming down my face as I read her experience of stress and overwhelm when waitressing through university.
Brene details that the restaurant was so pressured they had a short hand for letting people around you know what was going on. If you told your colleagues you were ‘in the weeds’ – they’d ask you what you needed and would all chip in to get it sorted.
If you said you were ‘blown’ everyone, including management would be very calm, swing into action and cover everything for you. You were expected to go outside and not do anything for 10 mins. No questions would be asked because it was understood you couldn’t even answer what help you needed.
Reading that I cried, not out of empathy for that feeling, but the sense of loss I felt about being a single parent and never having anyone to take over and recognise I had no strength to even give out the to do list.
It is that exact feeling of being ‘blown’ I never want any other parent, single or otherwise to feel.
You don’t need to feel alone, or that there is no light at the end of the tunnel. I can help…

Opened my eyes!
” Rachel spent time with me to really understand what was going on with my relationship with my daughter. Her perspective really opened my eyes to my own behaviour and the impact that I was having, rather than just looking at my child’s behaviour. I’m so grateful for Rachel’s calm and positive approach – it was exactly what I needed. Everyone needs a Rachel in their life when it comes to parenting!”
